Despacito was released by Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi in 2017, and quickly became the number one streamed track in just 6 months. The combination of reggaeton and pop music did not just draw an interest to the genre, but as well to Latin music generally. Billboard's Top 100 included four mostly Spanish songs from 2016 and two songs in 2015. In the midst of the Despacito's popularity in 2017 there were 19 predominantly Spanish tracks which made it into the Top 100. Then in 2020 there were 41. Justin Bieber's bilingual version of Despacito was released in 2017. After that, some of the most pop stars began to collaborate with reggaeton performers. Drake collaborated with Bad Bunny for MIA (2018) as well as Madonna collaborated with Maluma for the release of Medellin. By 2020 a few reggaeton performers were lamenting their genre's shift towards the mainstream but a new generation of performers, including Rauw Alejandro was determined to continue the evolution of reggaeton. It often blended elements from electronic dance music as well as other genres.
